Department of Mass Media

The Department of B.A. (Mass Media) offers a three year program based on the semester system. The department was set up in 2007. The unique mass media syllabus equips students with a sound foundation of different skill sets- be it print journalism, broadcast, advertising or public relations. With a broad exposure the students are well trained to specialize in their chosen field after graduation.

Programs Organized by the Department

  1. A media and literary competition, Hashtags 2K16 was organized for the higher secondary schools in Goa. 15 institutes participated in the same.

  2. Hosted the fourth edition of the Don Bosco Youth Film Festival of India on 28th January, 2017.

Seminars & Workshops attended by Staff & Students:

  1. TY students attended a one day seminar on media in Pilar College on 23rd July, 2016.

  2. Mithun Chaudhari and 12 students attended the Sahitya Academy’s Documentary Festival on 23rd July 2016 in Panaji.

  3. A one-day camera workshop was organized for the students in collaboration with Canon in Sep, 2016.

  4. Melita Da Silva and FY students attended a lecture on ‘BRICS: Yesterday’s Story or a Sign of the Coming Times’ at ICG, Dona Paula on 29th September,2016.

  5. SY students attended ‘Goa Arts and Literary Festival’ at ICG, Dona Paula in December, 2016.

  6. Prachi Naik, Prajyot Verlekar and Pakhhi Bannerje attended a workshop on poetry composition and recital at Institute Menezes Braganza on 25th January, 2017.

Achievements of the Students:

1. Ranjana Malik , SY won the Best Actor Award (female) in the State Level Tiatr Competition organized by Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) in September 2016

2. Annalie Gracias, TY is a regular columnist for the monthly magazine ‘Goa Today’.

3. Aslesha Noronha, SY was part of the women’s football team which won Inter-collegiate championship organized by Goa University in September 2016.

4. Archie Fernandes, SY, along with the NGO ‘Human Touch’ participated in the International Conference on AIDS, in South Africa.

5. Students won prizes at ‘Pegasus’ organized by Chowghuley College in December 2016.

Achievements of the Staff:

1. Short film PAYWAT (The Road Less Travelled) written & directed by Mithunchandra Chaudhari won Best Educational Film Award at 63rd National Film Awards The film was officially selected at 29th Film Fest Dresden, (International Short Film Festival) Germany, Jameson CineFest 13th Miskolc International Film Festival, Hungary, 17th International short Film festival, Ravenna, Italy, 14th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF), 9th International Documentary & Short Film Festival of Kerala, Second Asia International (Wenzhaou) Youth Short-Film Exhibition, China, 2nd Dehradun International Film Festival, 2nd International Film Festival of Shimla, ‘Focus’ Section 10th Signs Festival, Kochi, IFFI 2016, Goa and Don Bosco Youth Film Festival of India (DBYFFI) 2017, where it won the second award amongst all shortlisted entries.

2. Mithunchandra Chaudhari screened his film PAYWAT in 10 schools of Pune organized by Marathi daily Sakal & Deccan College, Pune. He conducted workshop on Short Film Making at TC College, Baramati. He was also called as a resource person for the winter program at Shivaji University, Kolhapur to speak on “literature & Cinema’.

Study Tours & Trips:

1. Students and staff trekked to Tamdi Surla in July 2016.

2. Fr. Ralin De Souza and TY students visited the Central Library at Patto on17th August, 2016.

3. A Field trip to Quepem was arranged in September 2016.

4. The students visited Kerala and toured Cochin and Munnar in December 2016.

5. Mithun Chaudhari took the TY students for the Hindi film ‘Pink’ for its relevance in Gender & Media Studies.

Industry Interface

1. RJ Sangram spoke about the career of an RJ, on 4th July, 2016.

2. Alexander Barbosa, Executive Editor, Herald, addressed the students on a typical day in a newspaper establishment, on 20th July.

3. Vinayak Naik, Editor Goa Today briefed the students on various aspects of print journalism, on 12th August, 2016

4. Amit Narkar, Director NCAS, spoke on ‘Role of Media in Social Change’ on 19th August, 2016.

5. Filmmaker Laxmikant Shetgaonkar screened his award-winning film ‘Paltadocha Munis’ (The Man beyond the Bridge) and spoke on ‘Konkani Cinema’ on 4th August, 2016.

6.Filmmaker Amol Deshmukh screened his national award winning short film ‘Aushadh’ (The Medicine) for students and interacted with them.

7. Ramesh Veluskar, author and poet, spoke to the students on various aspects of poetry on 18th January, 2017.


  1. Film Club– The Don Bosco film club was launched on 2nd July and meets once a month to hold screenings and discussions.

  1. Readers’ Club– Readers’ Club was launched on 29th July and meets on a monthly basis to read and discuss literary works.

  1. Newsletter– The college newsletter ‘News and Views’ was published four times in the year. It includes reports of various college events and creative writing too.

  1. Wall magazine– The department unveiled its wall magazine on 1st September. The contents comprised handwritten literature, sketches, art work and paintings.

Internships and Lateral Courses

FYs and SYs interned in various print and electronic media in May 2016. The following Lateral Courses were conducted for the students:

  1. FY- Basics of Photography in February, 2017

  2. SY- Digital Storytelling in February, 2017

  3. TY- Animation and Designing in February, 2017

Placement of Students- Fifteen students graduated from the department and they work with different media establishments like Sony Entertainment Television, Amazon, The Navhind Times, Prime TV, Pudhari etc.
