Another year gone by and it is time to have a recap of the year . Well, the year has really flown. However a number of events have taken place in the departments during the year and it apt to list them down .

Events during the year

  1. The year started with a Faculty Orientation Programme conducted by Mr Kishore Shah from 15th till the 20th of June. Shri Kishore Shah, Founder, Ideas Unlimited helped the Faculty come up with a definite Plan for the Future, such as,

a.Business Incubation Centre to nurture a culture of entrepreneurship in Goa to reach out to the potential new entrepreneurs, who need guidance & funds for their projects.

b.Interface with the Village Panchayats focusing on Women Empowerment by undertaking a Community Need Assessment Survey to get information & Data on the current Status of rural Issues.

c.Formation of the Alumni Association to reconnect to the alumni of Don Bosco by creating a Digital Data Base of the alumni . In addition the alumni will be provided with facilities of the Studio, Video Conferencing, auditorium etc on subsidized rates.

d.Initiative of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) to bring about inclusive growth in society by getting Corporates to take education on their Social Responsibility Agenda. It will also reach out to the marginalized students to provide them with quality, affordable, and responsible education.

  1. An Orientation Programme for the FY BCA’s, BA(MM), BSW and BPEd’s was conducted on the 17th June. The Heads of each Department then introduced the teaching faculty and their qualifications along with the achievements of each individual department during the previous academic year.

  1. A street play performance was held on 26th June at Menezes Braganza Hall organized by the Social Work Department.

  1. MSW and BSW had a field work orientation on the 30th June.

  1. BBA and BBA(T&T) Orientation was held on the 1st July . A powerpoint presentation by the Coordinators of BBA and BBA( T&T), namely Mr Cedric Silveira and Ms Tania Shirodkar, on the rules and regulations of the college was held.

6.The first of the series of “ In Conversation” was held by the Department of Mass Media on the 1st of July. The speaker was Business Goa Editor Harshvardhan Bhatkuly. Elaborating on his concept of getting PhD in life, Mr Bhatkuly explained that P stands for Passion and Preparation. Bhatkuly said that ‘h’ stands for hard work, honesty, hunger and happiness. The D of PhD in life is for Discipline and Dreams. . This programme invites eminent personalities from Goa belonging to different fields to interact with the students and motivate them with their success stories.

7. On the 7th of July , Digital week organized by the Department of Computer Applications was held. Various computer related talks and an IT Quiz was also held.

8. On the 11th of July the Department of Physical Education held an inter department football tournament .

9. On the 11th of July the Traveling film South Asia in association with ICG screened some films. The event was coordinated by the Department of Mass Media.

10.17th July saw the Class Representatives and Council Members having an orientation programme for them

11. The BCA Department went on a trek cum picnic to Kuskem waterfalls.

12.Investiture ceremony was held on the 31st of July. The Chief guest was Dr Suvarna Fonseca, Principal Santo Minguel Higher Secondary School, Taleigao.

13 The Value education department held a Postermaking competition on 3rd of August . The theme was ‘Beyond Boundaries’ . In today’s world, people need to move beyond barriers concerning caste, creed, religion, race, etc, it was explained.

14. The second series of ‘In Conversations’ was hosted by the BBA (T&T )department on the 6th of August. Mr. Suraj Morajkar, Managing Director of Sun Estates Developers, when speaking called Goa an architectural marvel and felt that he tapped the untapped niche in the real estate and hospitality industry as his creations embody traditional Goan architecture in scenic venues.

15. A Film Festival on Don Bosco was held on the 8th of August at Don Bosco college.

16 The students and faculty of Social Work department went to visit an aged home , ‘Arch of hope’ on the occasion of International Senior citizens day on the 8th of August. The senior citizens were felicitated with bouquet of flowers and saplings.

17.The Department of Social work had a talk on sexual harassment by Safe City, Mumbai on the 13th of August.

18. On the 14th of August an Elocution competition for Higher Secondary schools was held by the Mass Media department.

19On the 19th August an Entrepreneurial Awareness Program was conducted by Mr Jervis Pereira, Director GITIC.

20 In the third series of ‘ In Conversations’ on the 20th of August, Mr Pravin Sabnis ,  an architect by profession, who of now is into corporate training, motivational speaking and team building spoke to the students, on “Passion as a Profession”. The event was organized by the BBA department.

21.On the 25th and 26th of August , Synthesis , an interclass competition was conducted. The theme of this year’s event was ‘Express Yourself”.  The events held included events such as Gaming , futsal, treasure hunt, quiz, photography, cake deco, stress interview, face painting, singing(duet), group dance and fashion show. Mr and Ms Synthesis was also a highlight of the event.

22. i-Tech , an IT event was held on the 28th August for higher secondary schools by the Department of Computer Applications. Mr. Girish Bharne, Associate Vice President, Persistent Systems, Goa was the Chief Guest for the Inauguration.

23. Teachers day was celebrated on the 5th of September by the Students of Don Bosco college.

24. Dahi Handi competition was held on 15th September by the Value education department.

25.Magnify 2015 , the BBA (T&T) event was held on 26th September to mark World Tourism day. A number of colleges participated. The Chief Guest was Mr. Satish Prabhu, General Manager of Hotel Mandovi and the theme was “One Million Tourists, One Million Opportunities”.The next day a Water hunt competition in collaboration with an NGO, – Goa for giving and Goa Traffic cell was held.

26. Elocution competition for the departments of the college was held on the 2nd October as part of Gandhi Jayanti celebrations by the department of Mass Media.

27.Our college teachers took part in College Teachers Cultural fiesta, “ Guru Sriyan” at the Community Centre at Taleigao on the 1st of December. The teachers were the 3rd place winners in dance as well as fashion show.

28 On the 21st of December , an interdepartmental competition on star making, carol singing, crib and Santa was held.

29 On the 22nd of January the Porto University team led by Dr Maria de Fatima spoke on the doing Post graduation at Porto. A powerpoint presentation on Don Bosco college was done by Lata Rajeev and Tania Shirodkar.

30. On the 23rd of January was the Sports day organized by the department of Physical Education. The BCA’s were the overall winners followed by the BBA’s. Mr Bosco George , SP was the chief guest.

31 The BBA Department of Don Bosco College celebrated COSMOCRAT 3.0, where young minds think globally, their intercollegiate BBA event on the 28th January ‘2016. The event was attended by seven colleges, namely, Rosary, Dempo, Saraswat, MES, DMC, Xaviers and Damodar college.The Chief guest for the event was Mr Kedar Dhume, Managing director of two companies, namely, Advertising associates, Goa’s biggest design and advertising agency and Media Promotions Pvt Ltd, a leading event management and exhibitions company. MES college were the overall winners.

32 A competition on the occasion of Don Bosco feast was held on the 31st of January , “ Wealth out of waste”. The value education department hosted the event wherein a model based on the values of Don Bosco had to be created. Mass too was celebrated on the feast day by Fr Ambrosio of the Solomon Islands.

33. Colossus 5.0 an intercollegiate event was held on the 12th and 13th of February 2016. The chief guest was Mr Jarvis Pereira , Director IT Incubation centre . Rosary college , Navelim were the overall winners.

34. Prime Time, the intercollegiate event of the Mass Media department was held on the 26th February’2016. The theme was ‘Popular Culture’.

35. Mass Media department held a National Seminar on the 4th and 5th of March on the theme ‘Mentoring Relationships’.

36. Women’s day celebrations was held at a grand scale on the 8th March 2016.

37. ‘Insight’, the intercollegiate gala event of Don Bosco college was held on the 9th of March 2016.

38. Cross cultural synergies, the foreign students event was held on the 17th of March 2016.

39. The TY students had their farewell on the 23rd of March. So fast three years have gone by. They seemed confident and ready to face the world. Our blessings lie with them.

Study Tours and Field Trips

  • The BBA(T&T) went on a tour to Pune and Lavassa and Imagica. At Lavasa they went to the X-trill academy to study Adventure tourism.

  • The Dept. Of Social Work of The Don Bosco College had its students along with 2 faculty going for a 8 day study tour to Bhopal from 27October to 2nd November to understand the problems people faced 30 years after the Union Carbide Gas Explosion and also to understand other social problems.

  • The BBA department went to Cochin and Munnar in Kerala.

  • The BCA Department went to Rajasthan.

  • The MSW department went to Pune to visit various NGO’s and corporate working for society.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS:

BCA students participated and won the 1st place at Noesis which was held from 12th -14th December 2015 at Xaviers College.

BCA students , Diksha Shirodkar, Morrison Barreto, Melroy Luis and Marian D’Costa got placed at Wipro during the campus drive held on 9th December 2015.

Among the BPEd students, the following students won various intercollegiate events at the Goa University; Karishma Velip won the 4ht place at the Cross country event, Lavu Govekar won the gold in Power lifting and weight lifting, Avidh Morajkar won a silver and bronze in powerlifting, Paresh Azgaonkar won a gold in taekwondo and Magdaline D’Costa won a bronze in Taekwondo.

Career Oriented Lateral Courses:
BBA department organizes an UGAT coaching classes for BBA entrance.

BBA department also organized an event management course in the first week of November.

BA( MM) conducted lateral courses in soft skills, bogging and in photography.

  • Ms Manjula G Verma published a paper ‘A Study of Social Networks in North Goa’ in ‘Mass Communicator : International Journal of communication studies’

  • Ms Saania Sayed and Mr Jovi D’Silva published a paper ‘A Comprehensive Study on Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) & It’s Internals’ In “International Journal of Computer Science and Information Technologies

  • Atul Anand presented a paper ‘Cast(e)ing Gender in Dalit Literature’ at Pune University from Dec 14-15, 2015.

Seminars workshops and conferences attended by students and faculty:

  • Two faculty and all the students of BSW attended a Public panel discussion on violence against women organized by the International centre , Goa , in association with Friedrich-Stitfung India on August 4th 2015.

  • Ms Shreesha PJ and Ms Nivedita Karmali faculty of BCA attended a one day workshop on MongoDB on the 5th December 2015 organized by PChowgule college in Association with Foss club.

  • Ms Manjula Verma and Ms Veena Menon from BCA attended a one day workshop on Spoken Tutorials for Open source software on 3rd July 2015.

  • 8 students and 1 faculty from BBA(T&T) attended the programme Shaping young minds on the 8th September 2015.

  • Jesa Coelho, Russel Rodrigues, Asgar Ali, Hyacinth Rodrigues, Jitendra Chudhary and Burhanuddin Shaikh attended a Seminar at International Centre on

  • Shaping Young Minds Programme , conducted by GMA and AIMA on the 8th September ’15 at Cardium Hall, NIO, was attended also by BBA students, Ms Samprita, Ms Siddi, Ms Jisna, and Ms Clevia of FYBBA and Onkar, Abhinav, Neville, Emal, and Carlwyn of TYBBA. GMA conducted the prestigious Shaping Young Minds Programme (SYMP), in collaboration with the All India Management Association (AIMA)

Conclusion:

Using the principles of reason , religion and loving kindness, Don Bosco college is going forward in the path of excellence, both in academics as well as in extra-curricular activities. A number of intercollegiate events have been won showing our prowess in various interdisciplinary fields. The batch which has passed out is all set to display the values and ethics of their Founder, and show the world the material that they are made off. They are our torch bearers. Our hearts are with them.
